The Burgerspond, struck at Heaton's Mint, Birmingham, England, was the first coin to have been struck for any entity that later became part of South Africa.

In 1853, the South African Republic Volksraad received its first petition for an indigenous coinage. It was not until 1874 that the President of the South African Republic, Thomas François Burgers responded to such a request. He sent 300 ounces of gold to J.J. Pratt, the Republic's Consul-General in London with a request that coins the size of the English sovereign be struck. Pratt contracted with Heatons to strike the coins as requested. Two batches of coins were struck – the first batch of 695 coins became known as the fine beard type and the second batch of 142 coins being known as the coarse beard type.

The first person to notice the difference in the striking of the Burgersponde was Mr A J Ellis of Johannesburg in approximately 1944. He was a numismatist with a collection of every type of coin ever minted for South Africa, and he recorded for the first time differences in specimens of the Burgersponde.

When the first issue (the fine beard variety) was presented to members of the Volksraad some scorned the coins that carried Burger's image. The symbolism represented foolish pride to a very religious community, but others supported Pratt for producing the first coinage for the Republic.

GOLD POND: FINENESS: 0.917 WEIGHT: 7.915 grams DIAMETER: 22.33gm

Description:

EXTRACTED FROM SOUTH AFRICA'S FIRST GOLD COIN BY RESEARCHER MATTY ESTERHUYSEN

Specimen No 1 - Fine Beard:

Beard on the effigy of the President shows one thick front point, then two longer and thinner points, followed by three short points, The front of the beard is wavy. The burr on the obverse of the coin shows a double ring. The impression of the

effigy is very sharp.

Specimen No 2 - Coarse Beard:

The beard shows four thick points, the front pair being shorter than the back. The beard is heavier and flatter in curvature. The burr is on the edge of the reverse. The impression is fainter than in specimen No1. He declared that very few of the number two specimens are known to numismatists at that time, and that it was the first time a comparison of the two mintings of the Burgersponde has been recorded for the information of collectors. The dies in the collection of the National Cultural History and Open-Air Museum as well as an obverse and reverse die in the South African Mint Museum were examined very thoroughly.
