The desperate days of the Second Boer War between 1899 and 1902, are graphically reflected in the old Republic's coinage. In 1899, when the dies for the gold pounds had not arrived from Germany, Paul Kruger had 1898 gold pounds counterstamped to show that his administration was still in power. First one single gold coin was stamped with a figure nine, then another 130 only were struck with a pair of nines.
