Description:
The ultimate in enduring wealth: This Krugerrand Four Coin Fractional Set with each coin mintmarked, is an exclusive opportunity to embrace the legacy of the original Krugerrand coins and look ahead to a future of meticulous detail and artistry. A modernised set with ever-evolving technology, the set is one of the most iconic offerings of 2017. A pioneering step in coin minting: The striking of the first Krugerrand gave birth to an icon, synonymous with heritage and craftsmanship set to be the global nonpareil in collectable coins. It is only fitting that half a century on, we celebrate this icon with rare and expertly curated collectors' sets that pay homage to the Krugerrand’s storied past while looking forward to an illustrious future.
The Krugerrand set a trend, and other mints around the world copied the idea and took the opportunity to issue their own bullion coins. However, the Krugerrand became one of the world's leading brand names and remains so today.
The name 'Krugerrand' was derived by combining Paul 'Kruger' President of the original Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, with 'rand', the monetary unit of South Africa. Each coin in this set bears a 50th anniversary mintmark that celebrates the enduring value of this internationally recognised, timeless South African brand.
50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
KRUGERRANDS
Interestingly, during the ceremonial first striking on 3 July 1967, there were only 5 people present namely Dr and Mrs Diederichs, Victor Lodder (Secretary of the Treasury) and Koos and Adele Groenewald (Director of the Mint). The few visitors at the mint, indicate that the potential of the coin was probably not realised at the time. In the years following that, many Mints adopted the 1 ounce and then later, the fractional Krugerrand Coins.
It is now fifty years later and it is somewhat ironic that the specific anniversary day will be very low key again. As far as I know no official functions are planned for South Africa. It is nevertheless such an important anniversary that it is worthwhile to lift a glass on Monday on this Golden Jubilee of the coin. Happy birthday Krugerrand!
