Description:

THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINT WAS PROUD TO BE THE "GUEST OF HONOUR" AT THE 2002 WORLD MONEY FAIR IN SWITZERLAND.

To commemorate this event, a proof one ounce Krugerrand was launched. The "R S A" mintmark indicates that these particular Krugerrands were minted at the South African Mint and the "Baselstab" privy mark records the launch of these limited edition Krugerrands at the Basel coin convention in February 2002.

The first legal tender gold coin without a denomination, but linked to the daily gold price, was struck at the South African Mint on the 3rd of July 1967. This 1 troy ounce, 22 carat gold coin was called "The Krugerrand" and allowed the public to own gold in some form other than jewellery. This concept was so successful that many other countries adopted this model for their own coinage.
