After many years of negotiation, the reluctant farmer sold his land and the PREMIER MINE began production in 1902. In 1905 one of the most momentous events in the entire history of gemstones took place when the "Cullinan Diamond", a diamond of colossal proportions weighing 3,106 carats, was found at the mine. The PREMIER MINE, now the Cullinan mine, continued to be very productive until the mine closed in 1932. After the Second World War which had instigated a need for industrial diamonds, the Cullinan Mine was once again, back in production. With the thousands of migrant workers that flocked to the mines a token system was introduced in order for them to pay for their housing in the compounds at the time and their daily needs. Stores were built in the compounds for this reason. Records reveal that at times more than 4,000 workers were underground on a daily basis in those days.
