The Krugerrand brand has become synonymous with gold coinage the world over since it was first introduced in South Africa on the 3rd July 1967.
The legal tender gold Krugerrand was the brainchild of the South African Chamber of Mines. With ever-evolving technology and our legacy of
unrivalled craftsmanship, we introduced the 1/20 oz, and the 1/50 oz gold proof to the fractional range of Krugerrand coins: The delicate and intricate tribute to 50 years of iconic collectors coins. Using highly advanced techniques and approaches, these 50th anniversary coins take the traditional craftsmanship of the original Krugerrand bullion coins and amplify it to create our most magnificent coins to date.

Interestingly, during the ceremonial first striking on 3 July 1967, there were only 5 people present namely Dr and Mrs Diederichs, Victor Lodder (Secretary of the Treasury) and Koos and Adele Groenewald (Director of the Mint). The few visitors at the mint, indicate that the potential of the coin was probably not realised at the time. In the years following that, many Mints adopted the 1 ounce and then later, the fractional Krugerrand Coins.
It is now fifty years later and it is somewhat ironic that the specific anniversary day will be very low key again. As far as I know no official functions are planned for South Africa. It is nevertheless such an important anniversary that it is worthwhile to lift a glass on Monday on this Golden Jubilee of the coin. Happy birthday Krugerrand!
