In May 2012, the South African Mint attended the 27th Annual Mint Directors Conference which was held in Vienna, Austria, an event which is seen as the Oscars of the Coin industry.

We are proud to announce that the South African Mint was awarded the ultimate prize of the day, the prestigious “Most Beautiful Commemorative Gold Coin” for our 2011 Natura coin which features Nature's Families: The Meerkat. The accolades continued as we walked away with the “Most Creative/Innovative and Unique Packaging” and

“The Marketer's Choice” awards.

The 2011 coin series features "Nature's Families" and depicts the popular Meerkat family. The common obverse of this series, shows part of a family in their typical watchful stance, stretched high on their back legs to observe all and sundry on the desert's horizon. The families may grow as much as 40 strong. The Name "Meerkat" is the Afrikaans version of the English name, Marsh Cat. However, Meerkats do not live near marshes and they are not cats, but rather a type of Mongoose. They are found in the southern parts of Africa, which is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. Their specific scientific name is Suricata suricatta.  A typical Meerkat diet consists of worms, crickets, grasshoppers, small rodents, lizards, small snakes, birds, eggs, fruit and larvae as well as poisonous scorpions and seem to be resistant to many deadly types of venom.
