DESCRIPTION:

ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK

This Veld Pond  was issued during the Anglo-Boer War as the gold coins were needed to buy food and other provisions for the operations of the Boer army. The local tribesmen would only accept the gold in coin form as payment for food provisions, and not as gold ingots - hence the establishment under the ZAR ( Zuid Afrikaansche Republic ) of a small mint in Pilgrims Rest. One of the team, Johannes Kloppers, hand chiseled the blanks. This coin is considered extremely valuable by collectors all over the world given that it was borne out of the early Anglo-Boer history of South Africa, as well as it being the time when there was a global gold rush.

The first gold rush in South Africa took place in February 1873 when payable gold was discovered by McLachlan, Parsons and Valentine on the Farm Geelhoutboom. Alec "wheelbarrow" Patterson moved from the Cape with his wheelbarrow to the Mac Mac site as it became known then. It was officially called the New Caledonian Gold Fields by the then President Burgers. Patterson decided to move to the Pilgrims Rest area where it was not as crowded and made his gold discovery in a small stream called Pilgrims Creek where he panned the gold secretively, until William Trafford also found gold in the same stream, and registered his claim with the Gold Commissioner at Mac Mac. This news alerted the other prospectors, who then determined the largest gold rush of the time, and on the 22nd of September 1873 Pilgrims Rest was officially established as a gold field.
