EXTRACT FROM AN ARTICLE IN THE BUSINESS DAY 2009

Paul Kruger was born in 1825 and was the president of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republie (Transvaal Republiek), and was respected by world leaders, ordinary folk, end even by his enemies. Bismark called him the greatest diplomat of the 19th century.

Kruger led three deputations to London to secure independence under peaceful circumstances for his people - gaining it temporarily. But in the end, when he had to choose between freedom and tribute- paying serfdom, he chose to fight to the bitter end.

In the preface to the third edition, March 1942, of Judge Manfred Nathan's biography - Paul Kruger,His Life and Times - the learned judge writes: "Paul Kruger was proposed as candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize of 1899. Nominations for the award were considered by the Swedish Parliament in so far as it affected Science and Literature, and by the Norwegian Parliament in so far as it affected the Peace aspect.

A committee of five was appointed to report at the Hague Peace Conference of 1899, it was decided at that time not to award the prize to Heads of States.
