On March the 19th 1964, Gert Malan sent a historic letter to the Secretary of the Treasury. The letter was accompanied by two sets of pattern coins which eventually came to be known as the "Select Committee" patterns. It was stated that the coins conformed to all the requirements as agreed with the Minister on the 20th August 1963, except that it was not possible to make the coins bilingual. Therefore alternative languages were used (see the details section at the end of this offer below).
